China-based filmmaker Arthur Jones is abandoning shoes for a year to see if barefoot living could change the world. In his first tentative steps on the road to shoelessness, Arthur seeks the advice of doctors about the health implications of going barefoot. He dodges dog dirt on the streets of England and hookworm-infested human dirt on the streets of China. He dips a toe in the waters of social exclusion by turning up shoeless to meetings and weddings. And he meets other members of the growing Barefoot movement to see if their experiences can teach him anything. After a five-day footwear-free hike through the wilds of rural Britain, he starts planning the longest barefoot journey in modern human history: across the middle of China. |
